The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) is embarking on a comprehensive development strategy to boost local branding and micro-economic growth. This initiative includes strategic partnerships with the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce to revitalize the local business ecosystem, simplify permit applications, and strengthen infrastructure. The council aims to position Sandakan as a hub for local brands and a key bird's nest producer.
Sandakan Municipal Council MPS President Walter Kenson stated that a comprehensive development strategy centered on local branding and the growth of the micro-economy is being implemented. This initiative involves establishing strategic partnerships, notably with the Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The goal is to collaboratively plan and drive the economic development of the district. The MPS intends to establish a joint committee with the chamber.
This committee will systematically discuss the local business ecosystem, the layout of industries, and economic planning. The approach will leverage cooperation between the public and private sectors, with the ultimate aim of fortifying Sandakan's standing as a source of local brands. Walter made these remarks following his attendance at the opening of a local food brand outlet situated at Bandar IJM, Mile 6, on Sunday. He highlighted that Sandakan has been the birthplace of numerous successful food and retail enterprises. These businesses have not only thrived locally but have also expanded beyond Sandakan, evolving into established brands. However, he noted that the systematic organization and promotion of these brands have been lacking. This deficiency has resulted in the 'originating from Sandakan' identity failing to gain traction as a significant commercial and economic draw. The MPS, in collaboration with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, will undertake a reorganization and promotion of products and brands originating from Sandakan. This effort will encompass the food and beverage sector, local products, and related industries. The intention is to provide greater exposure and more growth opportunities for local enterprises. Furthermore, the MPS plans to establish strategic cooperation with the Sandakan Bird’s Nest Industry Association. The primary objective is to promote the bird’s nest industry and related products originating from Sandakan. This promotion will be executed through industry integration and branding strategies. The aim is to enhance marketability and add value to local bird’s nest products, thereby reinforcing Sandakan's significance as a key bird’s nest producing area.\On the policy front, Walter explained that the MPS has streamlined the procedures for business licenses and related permit applications. The council has reduced bureaucratic red tape and eliminated unnecessary processes. It is also fully implementing investment and business-friendly policies at the local authority level. According to Walter, the MPS will quickly approve and issue licenses. This is contingent on applications complying with the local authority's regulations and the submission of complete documentation. This aligns with current administrative principles. These measures have already shown tangible results. In 2024, 2,273 business licenses were approved in Sandakan. This figure saw an increase to 2,463 in 2025, representing a rise of nearly 10 percent. This increase reflects growing public confidence in the local business environment and the policy direction. Walter also mentioned that all applications that adhere to regulations have been approved. This indicates that previously vacant shops in urban areas are being reactivated. This, in turn, is creating a positive impact on microeconomic development. The MPS will continue to improve its internal systems and workflows in 2026. This is aimed at strengthening support for small and medium enterprises and the local service sector, thereby ensuring economic sustainability. Walter also touched upon a broader level of engagement. The MPS has engaged in discussions with elected representatives and relevant government agencies regarding the key conditions for boosting Sandakan's overall economic momentum. These conditions include improvements to major traffic routes and regional connectivity, moving away from an overreliance on local population support alone. He emphasized that Sandakan's economy can only achieve more rapid and sustainable growth by simultaneously strengthening infrastructure, the business environment, and local brand development. These integrated approaches are key to unlocking Sandakan's full economic potential
