A Lekeswaran was charged at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court today with the attempted murder of B Yoga Sundram outside a bar in Bangsar last month.
KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here today to the attempted murder of another man outside a bar in Bangsar last month. A Lekeswaran, 27, is accused of attempting to murder B Yoga Sundram, 40, in front of the Millionaires Kuala Lumpur bar along Jalan Telawi at about 3.15am on April 22.
The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, or up to 20 years’ imprisonment if injury is caused. Judge Mazuliana Abdul Rashid rejected the bail application by defence lawyer Izz Khan Nor Khan and fixed June 10 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor J Banusha said the offence was non-bailable, citing a risk of flight given the seriousness of the charge.
She also informed the court that the victim, who runs a scrap metal business, remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
'The prosecution is concerned that the accused may interfere with the victim and his family, as well as other witnesses,' she said. Izz Khan urged the court to exercise its discretion under Section 388 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows bail even for non-bailable offences. He said the accused is engaged and earns RM1,200 a month, and that his family would ensure that he does not approach the victim or witnesses.
Banusha however maintained the prosecution’s objection to bail, adding that the accused is expected to face another charge related to firearm possession at the Klang sessions court tomorrow.
