The Sarawak government, through the People's Project, is providing free underground gas pipelines to residents of low-cost homes in Permyjaya. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for residents by providing a safer, more convenient, and cost-effective alternative to traditional gas cylinders.
Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin recently visited several residents in the Quadruplex Taman Ceria (QTC) housing area in Permyjaya to review the progress of the Sarawak government’s People’s Project, which aims to provide underground gas pipelines to low-cost homes . This project, fully funded by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad ( Petros ), was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg on October 30, 2022.
A total of 15 families from QTC were equipped with underground gas pipelines directly connected to their kitchens during the first phase of the project, completed just before the Chinese New Year celebration. These residents are the first group to benefit from this initiative in OTC Permyjaya. Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin expressed his satisfaction with the project's progress, stating that it is on schedule. He highlighted that the second phase will involve 125 units, ready to be supplied with gas, awaiting homeowner stove replacements. A further 251 units, with approved applications, are prepared for installation in the third phase, also contingent on stove replacements. The fourth phase involves 682 applications, with 91 units having completed site surveys to determine pipeline routes. Installation work for this project is expected to resume after the Chinese New Year celebration and continue in stages throughout the year. For residents in other areas of the city interested in applying for this gas pipeline, application forms are available at the Sarawak Gas office. Catherine Dabu, a homeowner, expressed her gratitude for the free gas pipeline installation, stating that it eliminates the hassle of carrying heavy gas cylinders. She anticipates lower gas bills with this system. Another homeowner, Kong Chong Kiaw, initially hesitated to participate in the first phase but ultimately joined after family members in Senadin shared their positive experiences with the underground gas system, citing its convenience and cost-effectiveness.
