MANILA: The effusive eruption in Mayon Volcano continues but shorter pyroclastic density currents were observed on Thursday , Philippine News Agency reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a lava flow collapse-fed PDC at the southwestern slopes at around 8.39am.

"That activity is still consistent with the ongoing effusive eruption pattern, involving sudden lava collapses and collapse-generated PDCs without a major explosive eruption," Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol told PNA in an interview. Bacolcol said the events on Thursday are the same as the volcano's activity last May 2 since both involved collapse-generated PDCs from accumulated lava materials on the upper slopes.

"The difference is that last Saturday, the collapsed volume was much larger and the runout reached around five kilometres, which produced more noticeable ash emission and ashfall," he said. The collapsed volume was smaller on Thursday with the runout reaching two kilometres along Mi-isi Gully, thus ash emission was minimal, he added. Bacolcol reminded the public about the importance for strict avoidance of the six-kilometre permanent danger zone.
