Federal territories minister Hannah Yeoh has lodged a police report over claims that she improperly converted the land status of properties in Taman Segar, Cheras, from leasehold to freehold. The claims are described as defamatory and outrageous.
PETALING JAYA: Federal territories minister Hannah Yeoh has lodged a police report over allegedly defamatory claims that she improperly converted the land status of properties in Taman Segar, Cheras , from leasehold to freehold.
“A police report has been lodged against those spreading these slanderous claims. This is outrageous,” the Segambut MP said in a Facebook post. Yeoh also shared screenshots of a video by media group TV Pertiwi, and a Facebook post by activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, which outlined the claims against her.
In the TV Pertiwi video, researcher and archaeologist Zaharah Sulaiman asked how Yeoh allegedly changed the status of residences in Taman Segar, Cheras, from leasehold to freehold in a short period of time. Zaharah claimed many Malaysians, especially Malays, have been “waiting for decades” to change the land status of their properties. Zaharah also alleged that such conversions usually involved a lengthy process, including decisions requiring the involvement of the Council of Rulers.
In his Facebook post, Badrul, also known as Chegubard, said the alleged conversions raised key questions about the government’s administrative processes. He said the conversion of leasehold status to freehold carried major economic implications as property owners stood to gain a significant increase in asset value, developers could enjoy higher profits, and the commercial value of an area might rise drastically.
“When an application that normally takes between two and five years can reportedly be approved within a very short period, the public naturally begins to question the real factors behind such an unusual decision,” he said.
