11YO Malaysian wins 15 global vocal awards in four months

The soprano from Kuala Lumpur has participated in a string of virtual vocal competitions, winning 15 international awards in just four months. Among her achievements are a gold prize in musical theatre at the New York Music Award 2026 , a poetic interpretation special prize at the UK International Music Competition 2026 , and recognition at the Berlioz International Music Competition 2026 . Kimberly performing 'Defying Gravity' from 'Wicked the Musical' at the East United International Music Competition in Kuala Lumpur in January. Her most notable achievement was at the International Music Competition Berlin in February, where she received the first prize, emerging as the sole Malaysian winner. In recognition of this honour, Kimberly was invited to perform at the Berlin Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal, a renowned concert hall that is home to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, on April 1. She sang Part Of Your World from Disney's animated film She was the only Malaysian among 46 performers from countries including the United States, Turkiye, Norway and Italy. "I am extremely happy that I achieved so many awards this year. Performing solo in Berlin was my first overseas experience, and having the opportunity to perform before an international audience was a great honour. Singing in an acoustic hall in Berlin was truly a mesmerising experience," says Kimberly in an email interview.A Year Seven student at a private school in Kuala Lumpur, she is proof that passion, perseverance and self-discipline can go a long way in shaping a child’s dreams. "I have learned to manage my time wisely and set aside time to practise after completing my homework. I love singing because I am often inspired by other singers. One challenge is being mindful of my diet to keep my voice in optimal condition, as I perform frequently. "I practise consistently and always warm up my voice during my sessions. My idol is Filipino-American singer Angelica Hale . It would be a dream come true to perform with her one day," says Kimberly, who also plays the harp and is currently pursuing Grade Eight. Kimberly's passion for singing began at the age of seven and since then, she has trained under a vocal specialist. Alongside her father, Andrew Chan – who heads a KL-based performing arts company – she performs as part of a father-daughter duo. Chan stands proudly beside Kimberly in Berlin after she won the first prize in the International Music Competition Berlin in February. The pair regularly sings duets, practises daily and produces music videos for YouTube. This shared musical journey has nurtured Kimberly's vocal development while providing valuable opportunities to perform live at various events and functions. Kimberly has also taken on several notable roles on stage at school. In 2024, she played the lead role of Ariel in, earning recognition at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, where she became the youngest nominee for Best Supporting Actor.
