The death toll from a fireworks factory explosion in Hunan, China, has risen to 37, with one person still missing. The blast, which occurred in Liuyang, known as China’s fireworks capital, is the deadliest since a 2019 chemical plant explosion in Jiangsu. Authorities have detained eight individuals for questioning and suspended operations at all fireworks plants in the city for safety inspections.

BEIJING, May 8 — The death toll has risen to 37 from 26 and one person remains missing after a fireworks factory explosion in the southern Chinese province of Hunan , state news agency Xinhua reported today.

This marks the deadliest blast in China since 2019. The explosion occurred at around 4.40pm local time (0840 GMT/8.40am Malaysian time) on Monday in Liuyang, a city known as China’s fireworks capital due to its production of 60 percent of the country’s domestic fireworks supply and about 70 percent of its exports. According to Xinhua, on-site research and rescue operations have concluded, with 51 individuals receiving treatment at hospitals.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and police have detained eight individuals for questioning in connection with the explosion. The probe is being overseen by China’s top prosecutors, while the provincial government has ordered the suspension of all fireworks factories in Liuyang for safety inspections. This tragedy follows a similar incident in 2019, when a chemical plant explosion in Jiangsu province resulted in 78 fatalities.

The latest incident has raised concerns about industrial safety standards in China, particularly in high-risk sectors such as fireworks and chemical manufacturing. Local authorities have emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future accidents.

Meanwhile, the community in Liuyang is mourning the loss of life, with families of the victims awaiting further updates on the investigation. The explosion has also sparked discussions on the broader implications for China’s manufacturing industry, which has faced increasing scrutiny over workplace safety in recent years
