Seri Negara Reopens After Extensive Restoration, Revealing Malaysia’s Rich History

The 113-year-old Seri Negara has reopened to the public after a 10-month restoration, unveiling fascinating details of its past as a key location in Malaysia’s journey to independence and beyond. The restoration focused on returning the building to its Merdeka-era appearance.

Kuala Lumpur, May 2 – After a meticulous 10-month restoration spearheaded by Khazanah Nasional under the Warisan KL initiative, the historic Seri Negara has reopened its doors to the public in December 2025.

This iconic building, dating back to 1913 and situated on Bukit Carcosa, has undergone a comprehensive revitalization, revealing captivating details of its rich past. Originally constructed on grounds where the Carcosa mansion stood since 1898, built for the British Resident-General of the Federated Malay States, Seri Negara has served as a pivotal location in Malaysian history. The surrounding Perdana Lake, once known as Lake Sydney in honor of Sir Frank Swettenham’s wife, adds to the area’s historical charm.

Throughout its existence, Seri Negara has held significant roles. It functioned as the official residence for the High Commissioner of the Federated Malay States and later, the High Commissioner of Malaya. Most notably, it was within these walls that Malaysia’s Constitution was drafted and debated, culminating in the momentous signing of the Independence Agreement in 1957 by the nine Malay Rulers and the final British High Commissioner.

Following independence, Seri Negara transitioned into Istana Tetamu, a state guest house, welcoming distinguished international figures such as King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. While it briefly operated as a luxury boutique hotel from 1989 until 2015, the restoration project has returned it to its former glory. The restoration, guided by ThinkCity conservation advisor Justin Khoo, prioritized recreating the building’s appearance during the Merdeka era, a period of immense national significance.

This involved reversing alterations made during its time as a hotel, including the repositioning of the grand timber staircase and the reinstatement of original transom windows based on archival photographs and historical drawings. Even the lower steps at the entrance, previously obscured by road levels, were restored with mosaic and ceramic tiles.

The restoration process also unearthed intriguing historical artifacts, including a dog grave believed to belong to Sir Henry Gurney, the British High Commissioner who resided at Seri Negara before his tragic assassination in 1951. While the original dining table where the Independence Agreement was signed is unfortunately lost, a replica now stands in one of the building’s four galleries, which collectively narrate the story of Malaysia’s independence and modernization.

Khazanah Nasional is further enhancing accessibility to Seri Negara with the construction of a 600-meter pedestrian bridge connecting it to the Botanical Gardens, a project undertaken in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and supported by the Finance Ministry. This commitment to inclusivity aims to make this historical landmark more accessible to all.

Visitors can now experience interactive exhibits, like a phone booth detailing Malaysia’s journey to independence, and explore the meticulously restored spaces that once witnessed pivotal moments in the nation’s history. The reopening of Seri Negara marks a significant milestone in preserving Malaysia’s cultural heritage and offering a tangible connection to its past
