General worker claims trial to having gun and ammo without a permit

GOLD prices dropped on Monday, pressured by thin trading volumes as U.S. and China markets remained shut due to local public holidays, while some traders booked profits after last session's 2.5% jump.

PASIR MAS: A general worker pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to two charges of possessing a pistol and ammunition without a valid permit. Muhamad Afezi Alias, 25, claimed trial after the charges were read to him before judge Zulkpli Abdullah on Monday .

According to the first charge, Afezi was accused of possessing a Smith & Wesson 9mm Parabellum Model 3914 pistol without a valid permit in front of a shop in Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, at about 8:30pm on Feb 6. He was charged under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1971, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 14 years and no fewer than six strokes of the cane, if convicted. On the second charge, he is accused of possessing seven rounds of Thai Arms 9mm ammunition and one round of NRC Luger 9mm ammunition. The charge, under Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960, carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both upon conviction.In a related matter, Muhamad Ikhmal Aripin, 26, a friend of the accused, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here to a charge of obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties. He was accused of preventing a police officer with the rank of Sarjan from performing his public functions at the same time, date and location as the alleged arms offence, under Section 186 of the Penal Code. The charge carries a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both if found guilty. Magistrate Syed Farid Syed Ali set April 7 for case mention and allowed the accused bail of RM3,000 with one surety. – Bernama
