The Sarawak and federal governments have reached an agreement to ensure respect for both federal and state laws governing petroleum and gas development activities within Sarawak . This agreement, reached between Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, signifies a collaborative approach to advancing national and state interests in the oil and gas sector.

Both Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) will operate as partners, working in tandem to maximize revenue generation for both levels of government. While Petros assumes the role of gas aggregator in Sarawak, existing contracts previously signed by Petronas and its subsidiaries remain unaffected, allowing Petronas to fulfill its existing domestic and international commitments. However, Abang Johari emphasized that these existing contracts must not negatively impact Petros's role as gas aggregator and must align with the provisions outlined in the Sarawak’s Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016.The Premier expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for acknowledging Petros as the designated gas aggregator in Sarawak and the DGO 2016 as the legal framework enabling Sarawak's active participation in the oil and gas industry within its territory. Sarawak's commitment to national interests emphasizes the sustainable utilization of the guaranteed volume of gas, along with any additional gas produced from its offshore territory and continental shelf. This commitment aims to support industrial growth within the state and contribute to producing clean energy to meet the demand in Peninsular Malaysia, aligning with the federal government's vision of Sarawak as Malaysia's clean energy hub. To ensure Petronas can deliver the guaranteed access of 1.2 billion standard feet per day of gas for domestic use in Sarawak, the state government plans to request the federal government for exploration areas offshore western Sarawak and elsewhere in the continental shelf. Abang Johari highlighted the importance of ensuring the guaranteed volume is delivered at a fair price, promoting investments and industries in Sarawak. The GPS government will continue to uphold and safeguard the rights enshrined in the federal and state constitutions and those accorded to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963
