KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile has signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei Technologies Sdn Bhd to collaborate on 5G-Advanced and artificial intelligence initiatives, including spectrum trials and next-generation network capabilities .

The agreement, signed at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, will see the two companies conduct a 5G 3.5GHz dual-carrier trial incorporating 5G-A features such as three-component carrier aggregation . In a statement, U Mobile said the trial is aimed at assessing spectrum efficiency and supporting future spectrum planning and deployment strategies. Both companies will also jointly design and develop 5G-A enabled gaming service experiences, leveraging advanced technologies such as 5G network slicing to significantly enhance gaming performance through improved latency, stability, and overall service quality. Under this MoU, the parties will further explore the adoption of AI within U Mobile’s network to progress towards intelligent and autonomous network operations. U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the company is continuously seeking to enhance its ULTRA5G experience as Malaysia’s newest 5G network provider. He said the latest MoU with Huawei Malaysia aligns with the company’s digital transformation goals, including a 3.5GHz 5G trial to improve spectrum efficiency and initiatives to enhance gaming experiences through 5G network slicing. “We will also work together on integrating AI in our network operations, targeting to move to Autonomous Network Level 4, transitioning from a human-dependent, reactive maintenance model to a more proactive approach due to automated management. “Apart from reduction in operational expenditure and network complexity, it also means improved network reliability, consistency and enhanced ULTRA5G experiences for our customers,” Woon said. Meanwhile, Huawei Malaysia deputy chief executive officer Zac Chow said the collaboration with U Mobile would unlock significant gains in spectrum efficiency and deliver a faster, more stable user experience, while advancing the practical deployment of 5G-A and AI-powered network solutions. “Together, we aim to harness these technologies to deliver next-generation services, automate network operations and build local expertise that will create lasting benefits for Malaysian consumers and businesses. “We look forward to unlocking new technologies and innovations with our partner, U Mobile, in driving Malaysia’s digital transformation.”
