Upko Applies to Join Ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah CoalitionUpko Applies to Join Ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah CoalitionUpko has formally applied to become a component party of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. The party's president, Ewon Benedick, announced that the application was submitted to Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, who is also the GRS chairman. This decision follows a unanimous resolution by the Upko Supreme Council on May 25, after prior discussions at the divisional level. Ewon emphasized that joining GRS aligns with Upko's 'Sabah First' vision and the coalition's 'Sabah Maju Jaya 2.0' roadmap, aiming to strengthen unity among Sabah-based parties and advance the state's development, particularly in fighting for rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution. Upko is already part of the GRS-led state government, with Ewon serving as a deputy chief minister. The party's political journey includes stints with Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan, and a period with Warisan, before leaving PH in late 2025 over disagreements on Sabah's entitlement to 40% of federal revenue.
