Dr. Chin Chee Seong, president of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Association of Malaysia, highlights the need for schools to integrate problem-solving, communication, leadership, sales, financial discipline, and basic business knowledge into their curricula. Without these competencies, young people may struggle to navigate the complexities of running a business.
Additionally, hands-on experiences such as internships with SMEs, mentorship programs, business simulations, and digital commerce exposure are critical for bridging the gap between theory and practice. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, youth-owned businesses accounted for only 6.5% of all establishments in 2022, with most operating in the services sector. This low participation rate underscores the urgent need for enhanced entrepreneur education and practical training.
Dr. Chin stresses that while theoretical knowledge is important, overemphasis on exams and memorization hinders the development of practical business readiness and communication skills. Key competencies for young entrepreneurs include proficiency in major languages such as English, Bahasa Malaysia, and Mandarin, as well as strong communication abilities, financial literacy, digital business knowledge, and critical thinking. Many young entrepreneurs face difficulties securing funding due to a lack of financial history or collateral, despite having innovative ideas and passion. Dr. Chin notes that credibility issues, market competition, and the stress of entrepreneurship further complicate their journey. The rapid evolution of technology, consumer behavior, and market trends demands continuous learning and adaptability. Entrepreneurship is not a shortcut to wealth but requires patience, resilience, and the willingness to learn from failure.
The SME Association of Malaysia’s Young Entrepreneurs Bureau plays a pivotal role in supporting young business leaders through networking, mentorship, and business matching programs. These initiatives align with national goals to strengthen entrepreneurship, innovation, and digitalization. Government agencies such as the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Tekun Nasional, and Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd offer financing, training, and networking opportunities.
However, awareness of these resources remains low, particularly in rural areas.
