EU Dismayed by Latest US Sanctions Waiver on Russian Oil
European UnionRussian OilUS Waiver

The European Union criticized the US for extending sanctions waivers on Russian oil in the face of escalating energy costs caused by its strikes on Iran. The waiver delays a suggested 30-day prohibition, sparking concerns about the potential impact on the war in Eastern Europe and the global energy market.

The European Union condemned the United States' latest waiver of sanctions on Russian oil, launched while G7 finance ministers met to address various economic difficulties.

The move aims to lessen energy costs raised as a result of the US and Israel's strikes on Iran in February, which led to a Gulf oil tanker traffic blockade. EU Economics Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis stated that the EU finds this action inappropriate, as it provides Moscow with a financial boost while pursuing the conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized the need to reinforce strain on Russia rather than weaken it.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is in Paris for the Group of Seven discussions, hosted by France, to address these issues. France's Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated that a unified statement would be released after the talks Tuesday. The talks center on maintaining open communication as economic disputes prompted by President Donald Trump's trade barriers intensify geopolitical tensions
