After finding prohibited items in a cell, the Perak police chief instructed officers to increase their oversight, including investigating disciplinary angles and ensuring adherence to procedures.
IPOH: All police lock-ups will be inspected and monitored on a continuous basis, following the findings of prohibited items at the district police station here.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the police will not compromise on any weaknesses related to control, negligence or wrongdoing that affects the safety and integrity of its lock-up management.
"All police department chiefs, district OCPDs and lock-up supervisors have been instructed to increase their inspection and monitoring continuously. "The police are serious about the finding of prohibited items, including drugs and mobile phones," he said in a statement on Friday .
It was reported that the state police Integrity and Standard Compliance Department had found mobile phones, packets containing heroin and methamphetamine, tobacco, money and communication equipment during an inspection on four detainees in a cell on Tuesday at about 10pm.
"A police report has been lodged and would be investigated under Section 38A and 12 of the Dangerous Drugs Act. "The items have been handed over to the narcotics department for the next course of action," he said. "Investigations from a disciplinary angle will also be conducted to identify the possibility that policemen or officers were involved, including looking into the supervision and adherence to lock-up management procedures," he added.
Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said all state police chiefs and district police chiefs have been directed to conduct regular inspections of their respective lock-ups following the discovery of drugs, mobile phones and weapons inside a cell at the Ipoh police headquarters.
