Pandan Leaves vs. Cockroaches: The Science Behind the Malaysian Car Custom

Many Malaysians place pandan leaves in their cars to deter cockroaches. This article explores whether this traditional practice is effective, examining scientific research that reveals the potential of pandan leaves as a cockroach repellent, while also highlighting its limitations. The study explains that the concentration and preparation methods determine the effectiveness of pandan leaves.

The Malaysian custom of placing pandan leaves in cars to ward off cockroaches is a common sight. But does this practice, often seen as a traditional remedy, actually hold scientific merit? The answer, as research suggests, is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. While pandan leaves do contain compounds that repel cockroaches, the effectiveness of this method in a typical car setting is limited. A study conducted by researchers Li J. and Ho S.H.

at the National University of Singapore (NUS) offers valuable insights into the efficacy of pandan leaves as a cockroach repellent. The study, which evaluated various compounds and extracts derived from pandan leaves, revealed that certain preparations indeed possess cockroach-repelling properties. Specifically, the researchers found that 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, pandan essence, and the hexane-pandan extract demonstrated significant repellency across all tested concentrations, achieving repellency rates ranging from 65% to 93%. This research sheds light on the specific compounds responsible for the repellent effect. These include essential oils like 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, styrene, linalool and β-caryophyllene, with linalool identified as a key contributor to the insect-repelling properties. This scientific validation provides a foundation for understanding the potential of pandan leaves in pest control. However, the study also highlights a critical caveat: not all pandan preparations are created equal when it comes to cockroach repellency. In fact, some extracts were found to attract cockroaches rather than repel them. The acetone-pandan extract, for instance, exhibited attractant properties, drawing cockroaches at increasing concentrations. Similarly, the undiluted crude aqueous pandan extract also demonstrated attractancy. This paradoxical finding underscores the importance of the method of extraction and presentation of the pandan compounds. It emphasizes that simply placing fresh pandan leaves in a car may not be enough to effectively keep cockroaches away. The study's conclusions emphasize that while pandan leaves show promise as a natural pest management solution, the concentration of the effective compounds required for reliable repellency is far higher than what can be achieved by simply placing a few leaves in a car. In essence, the concentration of active ingredients in fresh pandan leaves is insufficient to deter cockroaches effectively, thus undermining the efficacy of the traditional practice. The practical implication is that relying solely on fresh pandan leaves to keep cockroaches out of your vehicle is unlikely to yield the desired results. As the leaves dry out and age, the concentration of the essential oils diminishes further, thus reducing their effectiveness as a repellent. This research serves as a reminder that understanding the scientific basis behind traditional practices is crucial. It also reminds us that the effectiveness of natural remedies depends heavily on the concentration, preparation, and presentation of their active ingredients. The study suggests that for effective cockroach control, one would need to use a concentrated pandan essence or extract, regularly refresh the source to maintain its potency, and utilize a substantial quantity of the repellent to achieve the required concentration. Ultimately, the best cockroach prevention strategy is to combine scientific knowledge with practical approaches. Given the limitations of relying on pandan leaves, the most effective methods include keeping the car clean by avoiding eating inside, regularly vacuuming to remove food crumbs, and utilizing commercial cockroach baits or repellents in areas where cockroaches are a problem. This combination of scientific understanding and practical action is essential for effective pest management
