The Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) will hold a meeting within the next day or two to decide on its relationship with Bersatu after party president, Abdul Hadi Awang, raised doubts about the alliance.

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS will hold a meeting within the next “one or two days” to decide on its relationship with Bersatu after recent remarks by party president Abdul Hadi Awang questioning their alliance.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party leadership would first reach a decision internally before referring it to Perikatan Nasional.

“We will have a meeting, and after that, we will make a decision. The meeting will be in one or two days’ time. After the PAS meeting, we will bring it to PN,” he told reporters after attending Gerakan’s 58th annual national convention. Takiyuddin was asked whether Hadi’s remarks signalled a shift in the party’s stance on Bersatu.

Hadi had said PAS was reviewing its relationship with Bersatu, including the possibility of contesting the next general election without the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party, in response to a series of actions by Bersatu that PAS did not agree with. The Marang MP cited several issues that strained ties between the two parties, including developments in Perlis, alleged interference in appointments involving Kedah and Kelantan, and Bersatu’s opposition to admitting new Malay-Muslim parties into PN.

He also claimed that Bersatu had weak grassroots machinery in previous elections but still demanded a large number of seats, although PAS workers had carried much of the ground effort. He said PAS would “review and examine each of Bersatu’s actions” and warned that “patience has its limits”. Takiyuddin also defended PAS’s directive stopping party leaders and members from publicly commenting on other parties without approval from the leadership.

“There is freedom, but there is a proper way to exercise it. If everyone speaks out, everything becomes even more chaotic. So, we have to have a vision and let the leadership decide,” he said. The gag order came after Hadi publicly raised concerns over PAS’s ties with Bersatu.
