Parents Urged to Be Vigilant in Choosing Childcare to Prevent Abuse After Baby's Death in Daycare

A recent incident in Puchong has intensified concerns about child abuse in daycare centers. A 7-month-old baby reportedly died after being abused by a caregiver, prompting a social media user to emphasize the importance of selecting trustworthy caregivers and recognizing warning signs of mistreatment.

A shocking incident occurred in Puchong when a 7-month-old baby boy tragically died in a daycare center after allegedly being subjected to abuse by a caregiver.

The video, which has since gone viral, shows the caregiver repeatedly hitting the child with her body, leading to cries of concern from parents and the public. This grim event has brought fresh attention to the dangers that some children face in places supposedly meant to ensure their safety, especially with reports indicating more than 2,000 cases of child abuse recorded in Malaysia alone up to August 2024, with many involving young girls.

A Malaysian mother named Zulfahanani, who commented on social media platform Threads, highlighted the importance of parents choosing caregivers who are both empathetic and reliable. She noted that children cannot speak up against abuse and stressed that parents must not compromise on safety, even if it’s for affordability or proximity. According to her, signs of abuse include sudden or unexplained behavioral changes in a child such as anger, fearfulness, or unexplained physical injuries like bruises.

As she discussed in her post, young children lack the ability to describe ongoing abuse, and sometimes their only means of communicating distress comes from shifts in personality. Protracted mistreatment can leave lasting emotional trauma, damage self-esteem, and stunt a child's emotional development, especially for those under the age of three.

Zulfahanani advised parents to adopt stricter criteria when selecting caregivers or daycare centers such as ensuring registration with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), clear protocols, and safety measures including CCTV coverage. Government efforts like the mandatory installation of cameras in Perak’s daycare centers demonstrate a growing focus on accountability, but parents should remain vigilant. She emphasized that not all caregivers are safe and criticized society’s tendency to unfairly judge working parents instead of advocating for stronger legal controls.

She warned against normalized explanations for bruises, suggesting that many could have darker origins. Her insights echo medical opinions such as those of Dr. Hadi Kamal, who reminded parents that bruises may not always come from playground accidents, and some are a result of deliberate harm
