KLUANG: The defence ministry has confirmed that the freeze on asset procurement for the armed forces has been lifted following the implementation of restructuring measures to prevent leakages or misuse of funds .
Defence minister Khaled Nordin said all military asset procurement matters were proceeding as planned.
“There is no longer any freeze because we have carried out restructuring measures that can ensure there are no leakages, misuse of funds and related issues,” he told reporters after officiating the Armed Forces Madani Economy Programme at the Batu 3 Camp here. Previously, Khaled said his ministry was discussing the status of the freeze with the finance ministry to ensure the military's critical operations and preparedness were not affected.
The freeze followed cases of alleged corruption and abuse of power involving several former top armed forces leaders. Separately, Khaled said the investigation into a soldier who suffered serious injuries, including a fractured skull, in an incident at Kem Iskandar in Mersing had been referred to prosecutors for further action. The victim, Abdul Hamid Talib, 25, from Semporna, served with the 22nd Commando Regiment at the camp but is now unable to speak and relies on breathing support equipment.
