Chow and Wong during the launch of Penang Bridge International Marathon 2026 at Komtar. — CHAN BOON KAI/The Star THE Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2026 will introduce two elite categories, for high-performance runners.
These categories – the Full Marathon Challenge and Half Marathon Challenge – will feature stricter qualifying times and only elite athletes who finish within the competitive cut-off time will be entitled to the official prize money.Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said competitive cut-off times for the new categories would be introduced to raise overall race performance.Wong said PBIM remained one of the largest and most anticipated running events in Malaysia, as well as an important pillar in strengthening Penang’s sports tourism ecosystem. “Following the successful relocation of the race venue to Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan and the second Penang Bridge in 2024, the past two editions of PBIM have shown strong support from both the local running community and international participants. “The venue has allowed us to organise the marathon in an efficient and integrated manner, while providing a better race village environment for runners and supporters.Participants during last year’s marathon in Batu Kawan. — Filepic “From this year onwards, the race will be recognised within the global framework of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, placing it among the highest level of marathon competition internationally,” he said at the launch of PBIM 2026 at Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s office in Komtar. Wong said the series comprises some of the world’s most prestigious races, including the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon and London Marathon. “Runners who complete PBIM can use their results to apply for participation in the world’s top seven major marathons. “This recognition strengthens PBIM’s international credibility and reinforces Penang’s position as a premier destination for world-class marathon events and sports tourism,” Wong said. Meanwhile, Chow said the event strengthened Penang’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting major international sporting events. “What began as a local marathon has gradually developed into an international race that attracts runners from across Malaysia as well as from many other countries,” he said, adding that it also promoted healthy living and brought communities together. He said PBIM continued to generate both tangible economic returns and intangible social benefits for the state. “When runners come from across the country and overseas, they contribute to the local industry, hotels, food and beverage outlets in Batu Kawan and beyond,” he added. Chow said the marathon, which has been organised for over 20 years, reinforced Penang’s ability to host large-scale sporting events. He added that the target this year was between 23,000 and 25,000 runners, building on the strong participation of 23,000 in the 2025 edition. This year’s edition at Aspen Vision City in Batu Kawan on Dec 13 will feature multiple categories for the full marathon , half marathon and the 10km run.
