KUALA LUMPUR: Industry players are advocating for the elevation of National Artistes Day , observed annually on March 22, to become a more significant platform for recognizing and honoring the contributions of the arts community . Currently marked by modest appreciation events that primarily celebrate the legacy of the late legendary artiste P. Ramlee, the industry seeks a transformation that reflects the diverse facets of the creative sector and provides broader support for its members.
This aspiration reflects a deeper understanding of the arts' crucial role in society, culture, and individual well-being, paving the way for a more robust and thriving arts ecosystem. \Persatuan Seniman Malaysia president Zed Zaidi, whose real name is Rozaidi Jamil, envisions a grander celebration akin to the Malaysian Film Festival. This envisioned festival would not only unite the arts community but also acknowledge the myriad individuals who have played pivotal roles in the creative industry. The scope of recognition would expand beyond performers to include production crew members, writers, directors, musicians, artists, and all those working diligently behind the scenes. Zed Zaidi, also the chairman of the committee for Industry Affairs, Welfare and Industry Data at the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), emphasized the need to broaden the definition of “arts practitioners.” He underscored the importance of recognizing those who selflessly assist fellow artists facing challenges, turning National Artistes Day into a highly anticipated annual event. Lyricist and artist S. Amin Shahab, whose real name is Syed Mohd Amin Syed Hashim, concurs with the call to bolster the celebration.
