Umpala secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has invited PAS to join forces to boost Muslim unity following recent reports that PAS is reconsidering its alliance with Bersatu. Asyraf proposed a collaboration under Umno's 'Rumah Bangsa' initiative, aiming to unite the Malays, while PAS president, Abdul Hadi Awang, stated that his party was reviewing its partnership with Bersatu, potentially contesting the next election without the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.

PETALING JAYA: Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has invited PAS to join forces to boost Muslim unity following reports that the Islam ic party is reconsidering its alliance with Bersatu .

Asyraf said PAS could work with Umno under its “Rumah Bangsa” initiative, which aims to unite the Malays.

“Let’s build the country together,” he said in a Facebook post. PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang earlier said his party was reassessing its alliance with Bersatu, including the possibility of contesting the next general election without the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party. Ties between PAS and Bersatu were strained following the Perlis political crisis which saw a Bersatu assemblyman succeed an elected representative from PAS as the menteri besar.

Hadi’s statement came a day after PAS treasurer Iskandar Abdul Samad said cooperation between the party, Pejuang, Berjasa and the Reset movement – should it become a political party – could provide the “most stable platform” to advance the Malay-Muslim agenda. In March, Hadi closed the door to PAS joining Umno’s “Rumah Bangsa” initiative on grounds that Islam was not at its core. He also hinted at Umno’s alliance with DAP in the unity government.

Hadi said PAS was sticking to its principle of joining forces with trusted allies who would not obstruct the “struggles of Islam”, accusing Umno of befriending anyone who would help the party gain power. The country’s two largest Malay parties established Muafakat Nasional in 2019, aimed at consolidating the Malay-Muslim vote.

However, PAS decided to work with Bersatu to form Perikatan Nasional following the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government and the appointment of Muhyiddin as prime minister in 2020, which Umno viewed as a betrayal. PAS also insisted on roping Bersatu into MN, which Umno opposed. The pact ended in December 2022 with Umno going on to back PKR president Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.
