PETALING JAYA: After all the uncertainty over his participation, singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia went on to play in the Hylo Open but huffed and puffed to reach the second round.
On Wednesday, the second seed had to dig deep into reserve to beat old-timer Pablo Abian of Spain 21-11, 21-23, 22-24 in a 54-minute opening round match in Saarbrucken.
Singapore's Loh Kean Yew, who defeated Zii Jia in the first round in Paris last week, continued his giant-killing act by blowing away top seed and French Open runners-up Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 21-18, 21-13.National coach Hendrawan, who was unsure whether to field Zii Jia due to his inconsistent form and mental tiredness earlier before giving the nod eventually, said he had expected the shaky start in Germany.
Independent shuttlers Tan Wee Kiong-Tan Kian Meng are the sole survivors in the men's doubles after the defeats of Goh V Shem-Low Juan Shen and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi in the first round. Wee Kiong-Kian Meng defeated Takuto Inoue-Kenya Mitsuhashi of Japan 21-15, 21-10 and will play against second seeds Mohd Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia next.
In the mixed doubles, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See and Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei cleared their respective hurdles to reach the last 16.
