David Zammiello is on his way out. The 62-year-old former longtime USAA executive is retiring from his post as CEO of Project QUEST, the 30-year-old workforce training nonprofit, after five and a half years at the helm.
Project QUEST is one of four organizations the city contracted with to enroll participants in training and provide case management. Although the number of people who have enrolled in training six months in has fallen short of the city’s goal, Zammiello sees the pace of enrollments accelerating, and he remains optimistic about the potential for Ready to Work to reshape San Antonio’s economy in the long run.
One question I was asked was, “David, you had this big job at USAA. Now you’re going to come run this tiny nonprofit. How are you going to make that transition?” My answer was, at the surface level Project QUEST may look like a small organization. But the network to operate workforce planning, when you think about the intersection with the City Council, county commissioners, Alamo Colleges, our stakeholders, it’s a very complex network to operate workforce development.
And our coaches become the core. They manage a portfolio of participants where they can build a relationship, and help them navigate through. We stay with a person all the way through the process. Once you’re in and have a coach, our coaches will not let them fail. A: Super excited. We have to give credit to Train for Jobs. Train For Jobs served a valuable purpose, and it is going to have a more positive outcome when the dust settles, and it was a necessary step. proved that, yes, this idea of workforce development is scalable. So when voters approved Prop B, I was excited about the art of the possible.
