The deputy prime minister says he will discuss the matter with Nga Kor Ming, who he described as his ‘friend’.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has criticised housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming for promising to resign if former prime minister Najib Razak is freed from his jail term in the SRC International case.

Umno president Zahid reminded DAP deputy chairman Nga that Umno and DAP are now part of the same government, and their leaders meet each other every week during Cabinet meetings. Zahid said he would discuss the matter with Nga, who he described as his “friend”.

“We meet every week at Cabinet meetings, so he should be making more measured statements. If we were in the opposition, perhaps such a statement could be considered appropriate,” he said after an event here.

“But now that we are in the same government, there is no need to raise such matters. “It’s alright, I’ll meet him. He’s my friend. ” Yesterday, Nga said he only pledged to resign if Najib was released from prison and not if Barisan Nasional secured a landslide victory in the Johor state election.

Najib, 72, is serving a six-year prison sentence in the SRC International case. His original 12-year jail term was halved by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in February 2024, and his RM210 million fine was reduced to RM50 million. He was separately convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving 1MDB funds and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment, a conviction he is appealing.
