In the same year he was named Australian of the Year for the key role he played in negotiations with Energy Resources Australia surrounding Australia’s first uranium mine in the Territory’s top end. With this mindset, he started Gumatj Corporation’s Gulkula bauxite mine, which is the first Aboriginal owned and operated mine in the country. His entrepreneurship allowed his people to develop a circular economy through the mine,with profits feeding back into community programs.
