NSTsports: Goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli, whose blunder denied Malaysia the gold in the 2017 KL Sea Games, bundled in Philippines captain Stephen Schrock’s corner-kick for their first win in the competition. seagames2019
The defeat brought back bitter memories of the 1991 edition, also at the same venue, when Malaysia also lost 1-0 to the Philippines.
The Filipinos were aggressive with Schrock pulling strings in the middle of the park, forcing Malaysia to defend in the opening minutes on the synthetic pitch. The Philippines continued to press, using their wingers to breakdown the Malaysian defence but they lacked the final touches inside the visitors’ box.
Philippines had more ball possession in the first 15 minutes of the second half but were letdown by poor decision making in Malaysia’s half.
