Proud2Play boss Christine Granger explains why sporting organisations need to be smarter in the way they tackle the implementation of inclusivity.
But just as it can be incredibly positive and powerful for athletes of all levels, the flip side can be damaging and ostracising.
In many instances, Granger has an intimate knowledge of what organisations or clubs are doing, or not doing, in their strive to improve inclusion and diversity."We know that many members of our community have quite negative experiences of sport and are therefore not active," she says. "In that time we've seen a fairly significant shift and uptake in the amount of sports wanting to learn and educate themselves and that's been great to see."
"The reality is that those words have an impact on people and that keeps them in the closet, makes them feel unsafe and not welcome in the space. It often goes unchallenged." The Sea Eagles decided to wear a rainbow pride jersey last season, but did not consult players before the decision was the made.deciding not to play that game because of their religious beliefsAlthough Proud2Play were not involved directly, Granger is keenly aware that in the sporting space there needs to be conversations before any decisions are made."There have to be conversations and there are ways to mitigate and understand where people are coming from.
