Durable composite decking has been placed at the site, so visitors to the newly opened section of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park can walk within the historic worship space, surrounded by remnants of the church’s exterior walls.
“For us to be part of this cultural park, it really says something about the makeup of San Antonio and its diversity,” said the Rev. “It’s a more equitable form of preservation that we were striving for,” said Claudia Guerra, cultural historian in the city’s Office of Historic Preservation. A rendering of a view from Houston Street looking south shows the rectangular 1870s St. James AME Church site behind an open plaza on the east bank. Behind the church site are public restrooms and a 250-foot-wide, 15-foot-tall water wall that will be illuminated with colored lights at night.The congregants, including some who’d been enslaved, had not had a permanent church home until they secured “the first physical meeting place for African Americans” and the AME Church in San Antonio.
