Google's Find My Device can now locate your lost Android phone or compatible tracker even when it's offline. Learn how it works.
has finally launched its much-anticipated update to the Find My Device network. Initially announced in May 2023, this update brings Android users closer to having similar features as Apple’s Find My network.
Similar to Apple’s Find My, the updated Find My Device network uses Bluetooth signals to track devices through crowdsourced location data. This means that if you lose your Android phone, nearby Android devices can securely assist in locating it, even without an internet connection. Privacy and safety are key focuses of the new Find My Device network. Google says the data about lost items’ locations is encrypted end-to-end, preventing unauthorized access by Google or others. Additionally, to avoid unwanted tracking, multiple Android devices must detect a device before its location is revealed to the owner.
The updated Find My Device app includes a “Find Nearby” feature to locate lost devices when they’re nearby. It also integrates with Google Nest devices, helping estimate the distance of a lost item to your Nest speakers or smart displays if you misplace something at home.
