Survey scams are among the way hoaxers are using text messaging to find potential victims.
There are numerous legitimate ways of getting paid to take surveys, but with an opportunity to easily make money comes the risk of getting scammed.
Melanie McGovern, International Association of Better Business Bureaus public relations director, said scammers are using new ways of finding potential victims. She said that instead of using traditional emails that might go to a junk folder, they use text messaging to make contact. “They are very common and a lot of them over the middle of the pandemic and on were coming in via text message imitating national brands,” McGovern said. “You click on the link and they ask for all kinds of personal information. So it’s really good to check the source of the survey before you put in any personal information. It’s an easy way for scammers to get personal information for identity theft.
McGovern said there are legitimate ways to make money off surveys, but the public should consider survey offers before accepting.
