Scores of season ticket holders and invited guests packed the outdoor theater in spite of the sweltering heat, fanning themselves as they awaited the players’ arrival. Mariachi performers and dancers from Fiesta Noche del Rio greeted guests as they found their way to brightly colored blankets covering the stone seats of the theater, many of them excitedly chatting and pointing to the stage the French basketball phenom would soon grace.
Rafael Nieto, 39, is a lifelong Spurs fan and thinks Wembanyama’s arrival in San Antonio is already a top-seven moment in the history of the franchise — behind the five rings and the Memorial Day Miracle in 1999. He said last year’s basement-dwelling season produced a “great return on the investment.”
Nieto attended the event wearing a Spurs cap and the national team jersey of former French soccer midfielder Zinedine Zidane, an outfit he felt was thematically appropriate. “I usually go to a handful of games a year, but that’ll probably go up,” Nieto said. “I have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, so I want them to have the same experience that I did growing up.”
