On a day when rookie sensation Anthony Volpe made his major league debut, the Yankees turned to their foundation pillars - Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge - to dominate the Giants.
Consider Cole’s take-down of the Giants. He started the game with a four-pitch walk to LaMonte Wade Jr., prompting an uncomfortable murmuring in the stands.. It was cold, the wind was kicking up and the ball was as slick as a cue. Cole himself was worried about the unfavorable conditions.
“Amazing,” is what Volpe was thinking as Cole waded through the Giants’ lineup. “It seemed like every pitch he threw was executed. Or if it wasn’t executed, it just missed.” That’s not supposed to happen on a 50-degree day when the bat stings in hitters’ hands. It shouldn’t look that easy.
