The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays completed their three-game series on Thursday night in Toronto.
They cannot finish in the red. There will be no first losing season since 1992, and it sure looked like that was likely late last month when they were six under .500.
After waving the white flag, the 81-78 Yankees have done that more nights than not for a month with a lot of rookies in their lineup. Thursday’s bad offensive night was reminiscent to many losses this season, but the Yankees did take two of three from a Blue Jays club that is fighting for its playoff lives to improve to 19-10 in their last 29.
“So that at least gives you a little bit better feeling down the stretch and heading into offseason in what’s obviously been a disappointing season. I’m proud of the way these guys continue to compete and continue to grind. It’s an important example that I think needed to be set and our guys have done that.”-- The Yankees were limited to seven hits while being shut out for the 10th time, the last two with two outs in the ninth. Oswaldo Cabrera had two of them.
