Yankees catching prospect Agustin Ramirez is having a breakout summer, one of several catchers within the farm system moving closer to the big leagues in 2023.
Even Ramirez knows that to be true. One day before smacking his second Double-A home run, Ramirez told NJ Advance Media at TD Bank Ballpark that his load is his biggest focus right now, something that’s connected to the trajectory of his contact that he’s been working on since this past offseason.
There’s room for Ramirez to grow on defense as well. Lots of it. That same scout that praised the Yankees for their organizational depth at catcher mentioned Gary Sánchez as a cautionary tale if Ramirez can’t improve behind the plate. “He’s solid on blocking pitches in the dirt. The key for him is growing his perceptual and reactionary skill set while maintaining high levels of focus every pitch,” Gershenfeld said. “As a thrower, he possesses good arm strength. The key for him is his exchange and to consistently get the ball in the air sooner on stolen base attempts.
“One thing that I’ll do on defense is talk to myself,” Ramirez said. “Everywhere. In the bullpen, watching video, even in the game. I know that in order to be a good catcher, it’s not just physical. There’s a lot more to it mentally. How to call the game, how to deal with the pitcher, knowing all of the pitchers. I’m talking to myself about that everywhere.”
