Xiaomi's latest smartphone, the Xiaomi 12 Pro, feels like a competent Toyota Corolla of the Android world. Is that enough to make you consider the handset?

What does remain is a heavy investment in the UI towards user themes. You can leave MIUI looking like it does when it left the factory, but I suspect that will be very few handsets. If you’re new to MIUI this is going to come as a pleasant surprise, while those moving from previous Xiaomi devices are going to bring over all the feels from their older phone… or hit the Theme Store and buy some more.

Balancing that is the use of the battery, and the 12 Pro puts a lot of demand, When you move into mobile gaming, increase the screen resolution to 1440p, and lock in the 120 Hz refresh, and you are going to be seeing high consumption. All round the 12 Pro feels like it is a touch too demanding on the battery when everything is turned up. Some optimisation on software updates should offer some benefit, but right now you’ll be thankful of the fast charge capabilities.

The software keeps everything simple - power users will want to look at a third party camera app for access to more features. With automatic scene detection that helps tweak your settings, the time from launching to taking the picture is comfortably short, with much of that coming down to the 12 Pro’s ability to focus quickly.

Pictures taken in good conditions pick out details with very few artefacts, although the colours feel either naturalist or muted depending on your point of view. Contrast is not as high as I would like to see, but everything does feel sharper in a good way. Optical zoom is welcome, but at x2 it feels like the bare minimum - other phones in this class zoom in further.With the Xiaomi 12 Pro I keep coming back to the word understated.
