The World Trade Organization lurches toward a leaderless future, at least in the short term, after members failed to agree on a temporary replacement for Roberto Azevêdo, who is leaving at the end of the month
has effectively become secretary of State for Latin America, according to interviews with more than a dozen former White House and State Department officials and current Republican lawmakers, aides and analysts., Pro Trade’s Sabrina Rodriguez reports. And imports of U.S. goods, which have been on a decline since December, also rose to $173.3 billion, according toBut for the first half of the year, U.S. goods exports fell nearly 17 percent and goods imports dropped more than 13 percent.
The Wednesday report will have much more detail, including year-to-date exports to China, which have been running behind target levels of the bilateral “phase one” deal.A bipartisan group of 61 senators want U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to make it a “core” trade policy objective to strike trade deals that allow U.S. dairy producers to sell their products using common names that originated in Europe.
“Our competitors continue to employ trade negotiations around the world to prohibit American-made products from using common food [and drink] names … such as bologna, parmesan, chateau and feta, which have been in use for decades,”Dairy groups, including the National Milk Producers Federation and the U.S. Dairy Export Council, want future trade deals to include stronger terms than were included in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which went into force on July 1.
