“I knew he wasn’t doing well, but it was a shock to me,” Ringo Starr said of the death of his longtime friend, Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts
because of an unspecified medical procedure, had taken a downturn. On Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, Mr. Starr’s phone blew up as he prepared to do some interviews in support of his four-song extended-play recording, “Change The World,” set to be released Sept. 24.
“Ninety thousand people called me to tell me he was gone,” he said. “It’s a shame. He was a beautiful human being.” Mr. Starr, 81 years old, joined the Beatles in August 1962, five months before Mr. Watts became a member of the Rolling Stones. The men bonded not just over anchoring two of the most renowned and successful rock bands, but also over their shared minimalist styles.
