A Malaysian couple, Celine Tan Jean Inn and Oscar Lee Yiang Siang, have created the world's first recycled lion dance costume. They used leftover materials, including food packaging, to craft a unique and sustainable piece of art.

This article tells the story of Celine Tan Jean Inn and Oscar Lee Yiang Siang, a couple who created the world's first recycled lion dance costume. They met while studying architecture at Universiti Taylor and returned to Muar, Johor, in 2017, where they started creating murals to support themselves. Their idea for the recycled costume came from collaborating with Joymom's, a local 'cookie' business.

Oscar suggested combining recycling with Chinese culture, leading to the birth of the 'eco-lion'. The couple faced various challenges, such as crafting the lion's head using leftover food packaging and employing materials unlike those traditionally used. The Persatuan Tarian Singa and Naga Kun Seng Keng, an international lion dance association based in Muar, even lent them a damaged lion head to be restored. Tan and Lee's creativity shines through the costume's design, incorporating batik and floral patterns. Tan noted that the patterns resembled traditional Chinese and Indian attire, adding a distinctly Malaysian touch. The lion's mouth features a hidden message in the Chinese character 'Fu', meaning 'good fortune'. Tan explained that during Chinese New Year, it serves as a reminder to speak kindly and share happiness with those around us. With the help of Lee's mother, it took them about two months to complete the costume, despite its complexity. Tan highlighted the challenge of keeping the lion's head weight under 4kg, but it ended up at 5kg after attaching plastic pieces. During performances, dancers must hold the head for 10 minutes, making it quite demanding. They shared their journey and the process behind creating this unique costume through FMT Lifestyle.
