Marita Davies was working for a global company in London and trying to figure out what to do with her life when tragedy struck Japan and threatened a home and culture she had never really known.
In her mid-20s, she worked as an executive assistant for an HR manager in a global media company.
Marita watched the news with horror, but it didn't hit home until she received a phone call from her mother in Australia. Her family is from Kiribati, a collection of 32 atolls and one large island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and the crowded capital of Tarawa — along with the rest of the atolls — sit no more than 3 metres above sea level.
"I just suddenly had this overwhelming thought. First of all, that's my family who I don't get to see very often. Marita travelled to her grandmother's island and was initiated there by the four spirits: north, south, east and west. "But if it tastes like fresh water, then you're welcome to stay. And so thankfully, it tasted fresh for me, so I stayed."Years later, Marita published a children's book about a Kiribati woman fighting to protect her home from rising sea levels, calledAlthough the tsunami that would wipe out Kiribati never eventuated, climate change now threatens the island.
