Woodlands Elite star cheerleader Payton Washington watched her teammates virtually from...
The Woodlands Elite Cheer Company building in Oak Ridge North is seen, Wednesday, April 19, 2023. Two Woodlands Elite cheerleaders were shot after another cheerleader said she tried to get into the wrong vehicle in a Texas H-E-B parking lot early Tuesday morning. One cheerleader was treated and released on scene, while another, identified by the cheer program as Round Rock High School student Payton Washington, remains hospitalized, according to a Woodlands Elite Facebook post.
Among those practicing were Heather Roth, Keyona Heubel and Genesis Mitchell, all of whom were in the car during the shooting. Woodlands Elite head coach Lynn Shearer said the three are still in shock but were focused during the final practice.“Send off was amazing,” Shearer said. “ was hard for her, but they got through it and all five of our teams hit strong routines in the gym.”
The Generals have not won Worlds since 2015. Since they are undefeated this season, they hoped it could be their year. Washington is involved in every section of their routine, and while it will be harder with her gone, Shearer said the team has a new motivation to win.The Generals and other Woodlands Elite teams will practice in Orlando Friday before competing Saturday and Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Roth was grazed with a bullet and treated and released at the scene, Elgin police said. Washington was airlifted to an Austin-area hospital. Founded 22 years ago in The Woodlands, Woodlands Elite has grown to four locations around Houston and several more across the U.S, although its Oak Ridge gym still serves as a headquarters. Athletes like Washington sacrifice their time to travel and compete at The Woodlands gym because it has some of the best teams in the state, Shearer said.
