Foreign Minister Penny Wong has doubled down on Labor’s new AUKUS submarine fleet commitment, arguing it’s imperative in deterring China or any other conflict.
On Friday, the Albanese government gained Labor Party approval for a $368 billion AUKUS pledge to build eight nuclear-powered submarines despite fierce debate within their own ranks.
Ms Wong reiterated that the AUKUS fleet would ensure “no country ever thinks that conflict is worth it”. “I don't want to talk about this hypothetically, I want to talk about what is really happening,” she told ABC's Insiders on Sunday morning.“We are seeing more challenging strategic circumstances. The question is not commenting about it, the question is what we do about it, and what we have to do with other countries is to ensure that there is a strategic balance in the region. She said the country had to change its approach to ensure both “deterrence and reassurance”.
