The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women said it praised the Cambodian government’s efforts but noted its concern that there are no provisions in the constitution that define direct or indirect discrimination against women.
CEDAW’s report also said the Penal Code only prohibits certain forms of direct discrimination, such as denial of access to goods, services or employment. Despite efforts having been made to improve access to justice by women, particularly in rural areas, the committee raised concerns about the lack of court cases on discrimination against women and that there are significant barriers to women’s and girls’ access to justice.
