'We need to build a peaceful society in which there is full equality between men and women, a society in which land, wealth and power are shared. We need to build socialism from below.' - Abahlali baseMjondolo

Late ABM women's league leader Nokuthula Mabaso in the middle, with ekhanana community and ABM members. In commemoration of Women’s Day, land rights movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo - otherwise known as the shack dwellers movement, remembers all the women who were politically assassinated while fighting for justice.

Most of the ABM-associated leaders who were assassinated fought against evictions, for land justice and dignity for marginalised communities. Mabaso was described as a heroine and a fighter, and ABM soldier who worked hard to ensure that more than 100 people had a roof over their heads. She was shot and killed outside of her home. We cannot continue to accept evictions, social abandonment and impoverishment. We cannot continue to accept the violence that is all around us. We need to build a peaceful society in which there is full equality between men and women, a society in which land, wealth and power are shared.
