Republicans are still vastly out-registering Democrats in Florida. And the uptick in voters for whom abortion is a leading issue may be eclipsed by new voters who care little about abortion or are satisfied with the court’s decision.
Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health OrganizationWhile some states have seen a sharp spike of female voter registration, in Florida a relatively modest 3.6% more women than men have been added to voter rolls through July 31, according to a USA TODAY-Florida Network data analysis.
New voters are 49.6% women and 46% men. The rest did not list a gender. By contrast, men had been out-registering women since the 2020 election right up to the day before the court’s ruling. And younger women aren’t the only ones shaken by the Supreme Court’s ruling. Sherri Monaco, 52, moved to Sarasota County in late 2020 from Nebraska. Monaco signed up two days after the ruling. “I'm disgusted that my daughter does not have the same rights to her body as I had most of my life.
The law remains in effect while the state appeals the judge’s decision. The state Supreme Court — where a majority of members have been appointed by DeSantis — could soon decide whether to revisit a 1989 ruling that shielded abortion on privacy grounds. She cited Kansas, where 70% of newly registered voters were women in advance of an August abortion-related ballot initiative. Among those new voters, Democrats had an 8% advantage, Tabatabaie said.
Abortion rights supporters, though, say voters know that the future of access is going to be decided in November. “I come from a primarily Republican area and it would just be easier to vote red like everyone around me,” she said, but “I think the Republican Party is not living and learning and growing with the changing world. I fully think they want us to go backwards.”
