A 47-year-old woman was shot and killed by three San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies and one San Diego Police Department officer Thursday after she allegedly stabbed an SDPD canine handler.

Deputies responded to the 400 block of West Beech Street after receiving a call from the police department for"urgent cover" after receiving reports that deputies from the Court Services Unit had tried to serve civil process paperwork to the woman but she was uncooperative and holding a large chef's knife. The woman eventually closed the door and the deputies requested assistance.

Deputies attempted to communicate with the woman for approximately 45 minutes but were unable to gain her cooperation, said SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs. At some point the woman opened the door holding a knife and stabbed the canine handler in the chest, prompting law enforcement officers to shoot. The woman was struck at least once by the gunfire and died at the scene.

The officer who was stabbed in the chest was treated and released from UCSD Medical Center, Dobbs said. In an online statement, the San Diego Police Officers Association disclosed that the wounded officer had been stabbed, wishing him a"speedy recovery."Anyone with information regarding this shooting is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
