After a couple of weeks of mild conditions with mostly yellow flags flying, strong rip currents returned to Panama City Beach Monday, with one woman drowned and multiple other swimmers needing rescue.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was pulled from the water behind Rick Seltzer Park and transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

About 3:15 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced double red flags had been posted, meaning the water was off limits to the public due to hazardous conditions. Cell phone alerts were sent to those in the beach area warning of the threat and the closure. Deputies attempting to rapidly change the flags to double red were frequently called to assist a distressed swimmer, the BCSO said. Numerous water rescues had been performed as of late afternoon Monday.

The sheriff’s office noted those entering the water when double red flags are posted can not only be arrested and fined $500, but put first responders and well-intentioned bystanders in danger when they enter the water.
