MELAKA: A kindergarten owner has lost RM1.6mil in an investment scam supposedly run by a “Taiwanese businessman”.
To make matters worse, the 53-year-old victim from Ayer Keroh here had also borrowed money from her family members to invest in the so-called business. Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Zainol Samah said the woman found out about the businessman over the Internet back in April.
“The fraudster who introduced himself as ‘Tan Sau Fung’ claimed he was residing in Japan. He persuaded the woman to invest in a United States-run online shopping mall,” he said. DCP Zainol said the investment scheme would require the woman to make purchases from the online shopping mall and Tan would later resell the products to a third party.Subsequently, she checked a website which notified her that she would be getting a commission of about RM923,000, DCP Zainol said. The commission was promised to her after the woman had deposited money into bank accounts provided by the conman through 28 transactions between May 7 and May 30.She lodged a police report on the same day at Ayer Keroh police station.
