PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a mother suspected of abusing her own daughter.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Noor Azmi Yusoff said the case was brought to light when an aide to Teratai assemblyman Lai Wai Chong met with the victim at a school on Wednesday and spoke to teachers to find out about the case."Later when the aide spoke to teachers, they said the victim had burns on her stomach, broken teeth and nails that had been cut so short that the nail bed was exposed," he said on Friday .
ACP Noor Azmi said police arrested the victim's 39-year-old mother on Thursday and she is now under police remand until March 10 to aid with investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 31 of the Child Act 2001 for ill-treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure of children. If convicted, the suspect could face a fine of up to RM50,000 or a prison term not exceeding 20 years or both.
