A casual worker on the Mpumalanga farm where the two Coka brothers were shot and killed two years ago testified about events that led to the kidnapping and subsequent murders of the pair. | ntwaagae

A farmworker described how he and others prevented new farmworkers from working at the farm minutes before the two Coka brothers were shot dead.

Testifying on Wednesday in the Mpumalanga High Court, sitting in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court, Siyabonga Hlatshwayo said a month before the fatal shooting, he and others met with the Pampoenkraal farm owner Cornelius Lourens Greyling, 26, to discuss casual employment. "He promised to call and meet us again and announce when he would hire people. Every April, we were employed to prevent fires from reaching grazing land for sheep and cattle. It was a pleasant meeting.

"I know the farm and most of the things on the farm. I know Greyling very well. I thought his senior workers would contact him to say we had stopped his new workers from working. Said Hlatshwayo:"I know that we had some work we did on the farm every April. I knew that every April, we're employed there. We were not entitled to work. We were not angry. We were surprised that Greyling had hired new people.

"We warned him during our meeting in March 2021 that should he employ others; we would stop and chase them away until he attended to our plea.
